Public health department spokesman Jason Davis says the county has three-pronged strategy for prevention. First is to bolster the front lines—make sure medical providers have the training to respond if a case presents.
“If they see certain signs and symptoms coupled with exposure to another corona case,” says Davis, “or that person has been to an area where there’s a current outbreak of corona, then what do they do from there.”
Coronavirus spreads through droplets from the mouth and nose. Davis says the second strategy is education on transmission and prevention.

The third strategy is open communication including a weekly call with the Oregon Health Authority and representatives from every county. He says if public health has any news about this virus, “you will hear about it.”
Since the outbreak started in 2019, there have been a total of 54 cases of COVID-19 disease, or novel coronavirus, in the U.S. While Oregon has not had a single case, neighbors to the north and south have. Washington has had one diagnosis and California has thus far had 8. The most recent California case was disclosed by the CDC on Wednesday afternoon and could represent the first person-to-person transmission in the country.
