Lane County has been awarded over $3.5 million dollars to fund homeless assistance programs in 2020. It’s from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD.
The funding has been allocated to county programs that help homeless people with permanent and transitional housing and a service known as “rapid re-housing.” Jason Davis is Lane County spokesman.
“Sometimes there will be an individual who is in a current housing situation but that housing is temporary in nature.," Davis said. "And so what the Rapid Rehousing does is it allows for those individuals to find housing to get into a more stable permanent situation. To be able to help them have that assurance that the roof over their head is going to stay there.”
According to a statement from HUD, the nation as a whole has seen a decrease in homelessness while the number of un-sheltered and chronically homeless people has increased on the West Coast, particularly California and Oregon.
