City Club of Eugene: Check-In with Eugene's New Mayor Lucy Vinis

City of Eugene

Recorded on: February 24, 2017

Air Date: February 27, 2017

Speaker: Lucy Vinis
Coordinator: Jon Belcher
First Questioner: Brittany Quick-Warner, Eugene Chamber of Commerce Director of Business Advocacy

Lucy Vinis, Eugene’s new mayor, took office on January 9th after receiving a majority of votes last May from a slate of four candidates.  On February 24th, she will share her initial thoughts from her term thus far and her goals for the remainder.

There are a number of issues that the mayor might discuss during this event, including:

  • Expanding on her 2017 State of the City Address and explaining her new Mayor’s Blog and Monthly Report.
  • Sharing her plans to canvass neighborhoods in each ward
  • Discussing efforts to address housing issues, including homelessness and Missing Middle Housing (providing diverse housing choices that generate enough density to support transit and locally-serving commercial amenities).
  • Touching on our capacity to grow as a city, while retaining the qualities in our community that we cherish most
  • Strengthening our commitment to work together to advance the values that define our community: social justice, human rights, and environmental responsibility.

In any case, you can bet she will speak about her commitment to keeping Eugene a city where everyone feels welcome.
Prior to her election, Ms. Vinis was Development Director of ShelterCare after a varied and diverse career including owning and managing a berry farm in Virginia. Her degrees are also diverse – including a B.A. in Religion from Kenyon College, an M.A. in Near Eastern Studies from the University of Michigan, and an M.S. in Entomology from the University of Maryland.
