Opponents of Measure 105 gathered outside the Springfield Public Library yesterday. If approved, the ballot measure would eliminate Oregon’s decades-old immigrant sanctuary law. KLCC’s Brian Bull reports.
Roughly 75 people gathered for the event, organized by Community Alliance of Lane County. Speakers denounced the measure, which would repeal the state law limiting local police’s cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
Johanis Tadeo of Springfield Alliance for Equity and Respect says they’re going to launch canvassing efforts beginning Saturday.
“We wanna vote “no” on Measure 105 to stop racial profiling, to stop interrogating, and to stop wrongfully detaining folks just because of their status,” Tadeo tells KLCC.
Meanwhile, backers of Measure 105– including 16 Oregon sheriffs - say it’s important to put the state into compliance with federal law, to crack down on those living and working in the U.S. illegally.
The measure goes before voters in November.
