If you’re in a recently burned area and encounter a smoldering stump, call 911.
That’s what Oregon authorities are asking people to do as the warmer weather may literally be rekindling months-old blazes like the Holiday Farm Fire.
“Lots of trees, lots of fuels, and that fire burned deep into the ground and into trees, and it held there over the winter," said Ed Hiatt, a fire management officer for the BLM's Northwest Oregon District.
"And now that we’re having the dry days, a little bit of breeze, the sun’s coming out, and it’s warming up the fuels again, we’re seeing to see the smokes emerge. Sometimes it’s in the big trees. As it gets a little bit of air and and a little bit of oxygen, it starts to smoke a little bit.”
Hiatt says when calling 911, to be as specific as you can with the stump’s location so that responders don’t waste time looking for it.
