A new Lane County Commissioner was sworn in and the longest serving commissioner was bid farewell Monday in a virtual “State of the County”.
Due to the pandemic, the annual event was held online for the first time. Laurie Trieger, elected to represent South Eugene, District three on the board, spoke of her plans.
“Often, newly elected leaders want to tell you how they’re going to be different,” Trieger said. “But today and moving forward, I will focus on how we are aligned. On what we share, on our common needs and our collective values. And on the right of each and every one of us to a life of safety with dignity.”
Trieger promised to work to end the humanitarian crisis of homelessness and address disparities in health care among other things.
Trieger succeeds Commissioner Pete Sorenson, who held the South Eugene seat for 24 years and has now retired.
The board honored Sorenson for his service and presented him with gifts. County Administrator Steve Mokrohisky praised Sorenson for his kindness.
“I’m reminded of that quote that people will forget what you did.” Mokrohisky said. “They’ll forget what you said, but they’ll never forget how you treated them.”
Sorenson thanked his constituents and fellow board members and declared that the county has strong professional leadership and is on a positive course.
“And, I wish the county, and especially my successor, Commissioner Laurie Trieger, the very best, and thank you so much,” Sorenson said.
Sorenson advised board members to listen to their constituents. In the New Year, the board will continue to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic, wildfire recovery, and the crisis of homelessness.
Lane County Comissioner Pat Farr, who was reelected to the North Eugene District 4 seat, also was sworn in Monday. Also, District Attorney Patty Perlow and Sheriff Cliff Harold were sworn in, after being reelected.
