Eugene High School and Middle School Students Join National Walkout

Hundreds of South Eugene High School students were joined by Roosevelt middle schoolers when they took part in the National School Walkout Wednesday to protest gun violence.

Community members cheered from the sidewalk as students gathered around the flagpole in front of school. Maya Corral is a senior at South Eugene High and one of the organizers of the walkout. She says she’s here to stand with students from Parkland on this one month anniversary of the mass shooting there.
“I would say overall I’m feeling heartbroken. I’m also feeling a sense of inspiration by the Parkland Students and I’m ready to create change in our community and our nation.”
Corral says she also wants to her fellow students to register and vote in the next election. During the walkout, leaders read the names of each of the 17 people who were killed in the Parkland shooting and held a moment of silence in their honor.

Students at the University of Oregon, Lane Community College, Willamette High School, Monroe Middle School and Edison Elementary in Eugene and students from Corvallis High School, South Albany High School and West Albany High School also took part in the National School WalkoutWednesday.
