UPDATE (Aug. 30, 4:59 p.m.) — A Multnomah County grand jury indicted five men Friday for crimes related to Aug. 17 demonstrations in downtown Portland.
All five face one count of felony riot, as well as other charges tied to attempted violence and vandalism during the mass protest:
Alexander Dial, 37, was also charged with assault in the second and third degrees and second-degree criminal mischief.
Zachary Lange, 21, was also charged with second-degree criminal mischief and first-degree theft.
Richard Klimek, 51, was also charged with third-degree attempted assault, second-degree criminal mischief, first-degree theft and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle.
Evan Duke, 48, was also charged with third-degree attempted assault and second-degree criminal mischief.
Antonio Zamora, 33, was also charged with two counts of second-degree attempted criminal mischief.
The district attorney's office didn't release specifics on all of the charges. In court documents the district attorney alleges that Antonio Zamora kicked a bus carrying Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer demonstrators and later threw a heavy object at the bus. Police used videos from the event posted to social media to identify him.
The Aug. 17 event was the latest in a series of demonstrations by groups on the far right and counter-demonstrations by people on the far left.
After earlier protests ended in violence, city leaders promised a tougher response this time. They kept the two groups mostly separated and arrested at least 15 people during and after the event. Prosecutors and police have also taken a more aggressive stance toward violence at earlier protests in recent weeks, filing charges in a May 1 riot outside the Portland bar Cider Riot.
