Flurry Of Activities At Washington Jefferson Park Saturday

Desmond O'Boyle

Construction barriers were removed from Eugene's Washington-Jefferson park in April, ushering in hundreds of skate boarders, bicyclists, and in line skaters. Saturday's official opening hopes to show the park is not just for kids, its part of a revitalization of downtown Eugene.

There's plenty of activity at the Washington Jefferson Park, Saturday, including an art unveiling at 1 pm. Skate and bike lessons will be offered throughout the day. Live music kicks off later in the afternoon and there's a skate competition. Community Events Manager Colette Ramirez says generally the city has received positive feedback since the "soft opening."

Ramirez: "I don't think the park is ever empty. You see people of all ages skateboarding. You see family's coming down there, there are grandparents watching. People are utilizing the urban plaza to sit and hang out. And the basketball courts have been re-activated. And the neighboring businesses too have been supportive of the skate park and happy to see the influx of positive activity."

Ramirez says there have been growing pains since kids began using the park. The City has been working with law enforcement and other agencies to promote a healthy environment. Ramirez hopes the family activities this weekend will set the tone for a positive experience to anyone who wants to hang out in Eugene's iconic park.
