This is Sandy Brown Jensen, and you’re listening to Viz City, KLCC”s Arts Review Program. Ernest Hemingway once famously defined courage as “grace under pressure.”If there’s a “Grace Under Pressure” award, I want to hand it to Maude Kerns Art Center for the explosively inventive way their creative team has risen to the COVID 2020 challenge.
They were among the first to take fund-raising online, as well as to provide ways for us to support the Art Center through Amazon Smile and Market of Choice’s 4% Beneficiaries programs.
But that, my friends, is the tip of the iceberg. In my last episode, I mentioned in closing that Maude Kerns Art Center has a good show up now called “Inspired Instructors: Works by Maude Kerns Art Educators,” which will be up through Friday, June 26. You can grab a mask and enjoy the show in the gallery at 1910 East 15th Avenue or see it online.
Can’t get enough of this online stuff? Then check out the Online Members Gallery, where you will find the cream of the crop from Susan Applegate to Miyuki Yamazaki.
But wait! There’s more! You’ve probably heard that their annual “Art in the Vineyard” event had to be cancelled because that’s just too many of us milling around together, but again defining “grace under pressure,” the Maude Kerns folks have invented multiple art pop up events.
I’m pretty excited about all of them, but let me slow down and explain FIRST that Maude Kerns Art Center and The 5th Street Public Market have teamed up for a “Maude At The Market” event on Saturday, June 27th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. featuring a pop-up art gallery on display on every floor and courtyard throughout The Market.
And let me explain SECOND that there is another series of art popups at the gallery itself called “Art in the Courtyard” on Saturday, July 4, from noon until 6 pm. Rainsong Winery will be pouring for this event and food is provided by a local vendor. There will be art both indoors and out to see and to sell if something special catches your eye. “Art in the Courtyard” also takes place in August on the 1st and 29th.
I know that’s a lot of detail, but you can review it at mkartcenter.org or on the Viz City blog on KLCC.
I think it takes a lot of moxy to turn bad-time lemons into this much fresh summer lemonade. This “Courage is Grace Under Pressure” award is for YOU Maude Kerns Art Center!
