Eugene Masonic Cemetery Association: Memorial Day
Eugene Masonic Cemetery Association: Memorial Day
On Sunday, May 25th and Monday, May 26th from 11 to 5, the Eugene Masonic Cemetery Association (EMCA) will host a series of events at the cemetery commemorating those who fought for our freedom. We hope you will feature our program before and/or during Memorial Day Weekend. All events are free and open to the public. We will also be celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the establishment of the EMCA, the nonprofit organization that owns the cemetery and brought it back to life.
Gates at 25th and University will open at 11am both days for drop-offs but there is no parking in the cemetery. Up the main gravel road from the entrance is Hope Abbey, a magnificently restored Egyptian Revival mausoleum, where there will be displays, and cake and coffee will be served both days from 11 to 5pm. Flags will fly over veterans’ graves and a trumpeter will play taps both days at 12:15pm at the Public Square, up the hill from the Abbey. A ”History Hunt” will be offered each day from 11 to 4, starting at the Abbey. A fun activity for family and children involved getting a clipboard and map and then searching for specific graves. Everyone who participates gets a prize. A ninety-minute tour of the cemetery will be provided at 12:30 each day, starting at
the Abbey. Site Manager Diego Llewellyn-Jones will lead a landscape and arboretum tour on Sunday, and board member Caroline Forell will lead a historic highlights tour on Monday. On Sunday at 6pm there will be the first concert in our “Music on the Square” summer series. It will take place at the Public Square and feature the Oregon Tuba Ensemble. Bring a low lawn chair or blanket for sitting on the grass.
