Learn to craft stories that pull readers in and don’t let go in this 8-week online class with Emma Stockman.

You know that feeling when a story grabs you? Time disappears. You’re in it. The only thing that exists is you and the story.

That's narrative tension.

Because narrative tension lives in so many different places in a story, when it doesn’t work–when your story falls flat–it can be hard to figure out. Especially on your own. It’s a frustrating, discouraging experience, making you feel like you’re not a good enough writer and that you’ll never figure it out.

In this eight-week online workshop with Seattle-based writer Emma Stockman, you’ll learn how narrative tension works, through close readings of writing that does it well, so you can tighten your stories into deliciously gripping tales that make time stand still. You’ll learn how to let narrative tension guide the feedback you ask for and what to do with it.

Emma Stockman (she/her) is a Seattle-based writer and educator with an MFA in Fiction from the University of Oregon.

In a world that feels increasingly fast-paced, unpredictable, and overwhelming, it’s more important than ever to stay anchored in what is steady, trustworthy, and wise.

This special weekend retreat with renowned Dharma teacher Tuere Sala—guiding teacher at Spirit Rock Retreat Center and Seattle Insight Meditation Society—will lead us in exploring a timely and essential theme:
The Importance of Maintaining Inner Stability in External Uncertainty

Dates: Friday 6/6 6-8pm

Comfortable chairs will be provided. To be able to stay on the premises, please bring a box lunch on Saturday and Sunday.

Registration fees cover administrative costs only. The teacher does not receive any money from these fees. They offer the teachings freely through the spirit of dana or "generosity", which is how the teachings have been transmitted for 2,600 years. Dharma teachers live with faith that those who hear and practice the teachings will be inspired to provide for their support. During the retreat, you will be given the opportunity to offer dana, which will go directly to Tuere.

In order to make the retreat as financially accessible as possible, we offer a tiered fee schedule. Please pay the highest amount you feel comfortable with.

A weeklong creative writing camp for young writers who dream big, weird, and wonderful.

This is the summer camp where your wild imagination isn’t just welcome—it’s essential.

Join us for a week of world-building, character-crafting, and plot-twisting fun, where you’ll create your own short story set in a universe of your own making. With two master fantasy and sci-fi writers as your guides, you’ll dream up something amazing—and bring it to life.

This camp is perfect for middle school writers (ages 11–14) who love stories and want to write their own—especially if they’re into science fiction, fantasy, or both. Mature younger writers, and writers who’ve attended our monthly Write Club workshops are also welcome to join in.

Wordcrafters SciFi & Fantasy summer camp is taught by two masters of science fiction and fantasy storytelling—Sarina Dorie and Nina Kiriki Hoffman.
