Springfield School Board Approves Budget & Appoints Interim Superintendent

Thursday is the last day of school in Springfield and this week the school board finalized a few big decisions about next year.

The school board Monday voted unanimously to hire Dr. Susan Rieke-Smith as Interim Superintendent for the upcoming academic year. She has already been in the role for several months, after the abrupt departure of Superintendent Dr. Hertica Martin. The board also approved next year's budget, which Spokeswoman Devon Ashbridge calls a status quo amount. It won't allow them to make strategic reinvestments like they'd hoped, but they won't have to make any cuts.

Ashbridge: "It maintains a full school year calendar for students again. This will be our second year with no furlough days and no days missed for students. It also helps us to maintain our staffing levels. And (we're) also able to increase our school supply budget for the first time in several years."

On Tuesday the district and the Springfield Education Association, which represents certified staff, reached a two-year contract agreement effective July 1, 2015. It includes a 2-percent cost of living adjustment, step increases and more professional development opportunities. The school district's classified staff is expected to vote on a contract proposal Wednesday.
