Construction on Howard Elementary and Roosevelt Middle schools is underway in Eugene. The principals and designers are hosting meetings tonight and tomorrow to give updates on the buildings.
Community members are invited to get an update on the projects and see the final designs for Howard and Roosevelt. Eugene 4J School District spokeswoman Kerry Delf says most of the district's buildings were constructed in the 40's, 50's and 60's and education has changed a lot since then.
Delf: "These new buildings are designed to accommodate changes in education as well as be more attractive, functional buildings. They include space for teachers and students to collaborate, to have group work. And, also to have the regular, large classroom spaces that we're so used to in our older schools."
Four of 4J's oldest schools are being replaced or renovated over the next few years – that's after voters approved a $170 million school bond measure in 2013. Howard and Roosevelt will open next fall and two more – River Road Elementary and the Arts & Technology Academy will open in the fall of 2017.
