This week, restaurants at the Erb Memorial Union on the University of Oregon campus are donating a portion of their proceeds to Ducks Feeding Ducks. This effort is meant to address food insecurity as KLCC’s Aubrey Bulkeley reports.
30 – 40 percent of college students in the US struggle with food insecurity.
Ducks Feeding Ducks is a program for students who need a quick, hot meal. Those who qualify will get 10 dollars added to their student account within about an hour.
Taylor McHolm, Program Director with the UO Sustainability Center, says this is just one small way to address student hunger.
“It’s not just about not having enough food, but it’s about what are the consequences of being in a situation where you’re not able to participate socially and what are the impacts of that too, right. So this is a really, really complex problem."
The Student Sustainability Center received special funds from UO President Michael Schill to start several new initiatives this year to provide hungry students access to food. The hope is to raise funds to sustain the longevity of the program and help more students.
