Roseburg Schools Bond Narrowly Defeated

Roseburgbondlevy.com

A bond to improve safety and replace and expand Roseburg Public Schools was voted down Tuesday. Results were close, with about 48 percent voting for the measure.

Roseburg Superintendent Jared Cordon says polling showed support for the bond at 85 percent. He thinks the pandemic and an unstable economy probably contributed to the election results, but that the underlying community values haven’t changed.

“The efforts of the last several months have shed light on the serious needs for improvement within our school facilities,” says Cordon. “So this really doesn’t change our long-term plan to ensure that our kids and staff have safe places to be and teach and learn.”

Cordon believes people remain committed to upgrading and securing schools. He says they’ll have to adjust in the short term, but the district is focused 50 to 100 years down the road, and will keep working on long-term building and infrastructure changes.
