Irving Elementary School in North Eugene is home to Oregon’s 2021 Teacher of the Year. Second grade teacher Nicole Butler-Hooten was bestowed the honor by Gov. Kate Brown during a Zoom staff meeting on Tuesday.
Butler-Hooten has been at Irving Elementary for 14 years. In a release announcing the award, Gov. Brown said “every day, Nicole demonstrates how inclusive and cultural competent education has the power to shape our future for generations to come." She added that “her seamless incorporation of equity into the classroom sets an example for us all, as we work to make Oregon a welcoming place that sets every student up for success from cradle to career.”
