Oakridge School Board Votes to Keep Superintendent

Last (Monday) night, the Oakridge School Board voted unanimously to renew Superintendent Reta Doland’s contract. Board member Tami Edmunds read a statement that began:

“We the Oakridge School Board have completed the evaluation of Superintendent Doland. We find that she has demonstrated exemplary leadership skills during a global pandemic… She is a great spokesperson for the needs and the vision of a small district.”

The board's vote comes after a community petition to remove Doland prompted an investigation. The independent report, completed last month by Rob Saxton, found the superintendent needed to improve her communication, but that the request for removal was not warranted.

The school board did not address a recent vote of no confidence in Doland by 90% of the Oakridge School Teacher’s Association. Board Chair John Weddle said, “Mr. Saxton was not asked to investigate complaints in the vote of no confidence by the Oakridge School Teacher’s Association. Instead, the OTA president was asked to have individual teachers with concerns use the district’s complaint procedure.”

Weddle said teachers should address complaints through a process recommended by the Oregon School Boards Association, which works through their immediate supervisor and the superintendent before reaching the board.
