Eugene City Council To Vote On Climate Change Ordinance

City of Eugene

The Eugene City Council is set to vote on a Climate Recovery Ordinance tonight. The proposal includes a plan to reduce the city's output of greenhouse gasses, monitor progress, and requires the city manager to bring back a community gas reduction goal. Councilor Alan Zelenka proposed the ordinance. He says the majority of Eugenians showed support for the measure during the public comment period last week.

Zelenka: "I feel very confident the actions that we will take will actually save us money and they are real cost effective actions that will combat climate change and save us money through energy efficiency and doing things smarter. In the end we will be better off by acting, than by ignoring climate change."

The ordinance originated from a request made by dozens of youth who testified at the City Council urging them to make a stronger commitment to local action. The meeting is 7:30 tonight at Harris Hall in Eugene.
