Federal Cuts To Food Stamp Program Will Hurt Oregon

Last week, the House of Representatives voted to cut nearly 40 billion dollars from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAPS. The decision will influence more than 800,000 Oregonians currently enrolled in the program.

The cuts will cut affect assistance to veterans, seniors, and the school lunch program. Robyn Johnson is the Public Policy Manager for Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon. She says the reductions will hit the state’s economy as well.

Johnson- “It’s not just people losing food off of their tables, out of their cupboards, or out of their refrigerators. It’s the grocer where they spend their money; it’s the truckers who bring the food to the grocery store, it’s the farmers who supply food to the processor. Every point in that chain is going to feel the reduction in SNAP benefits.”

Legislators claim too many unqualified people are on Food Stamps. Johnson says the Food Stamp fraud rate in Oregon is less than 1%.
