The nonpartisan West Lane County Commissioner represents the western portion of the county from West Eugene north to Junction City and west to the coast. Lane County commissioners will face many challenges in the years ahead, including adjustments to a new county administrator, budget issues caused by decreased federal funding, and rapid expansion of the county’s Community Health Centers to address the needs of the newly insured.
Both candidates in the City Club debate agree on the importance of jobs and a strong economic recovery, but each has a different development philosophy. Bozievich, the incumbent, focuses his campaign on public safety. Lesley, the challenger, points to the need to restore trust, efficiency, and transparency to county government. Interest in this seat is particularly high, and these candidates have raised more money than candidates for the other two open county commission positions.
Both West Lane candidates are engineers. Bozievich earned his BS in agricultural engineering at the University of Maryland College Park and was a senior engineer with EWEB prior to his election to the county commission. Lesley earned her MS in bioresource engineering at Oregon State and is a water/wastewater energy efficiency engineer with Cascade Energy.
