Rally-goers took to Eugene’s federal courthouse steps Saturday as part of nationwide families belong together rallies.
When Catherine Clinton organized a rally two weeks ago, close to 80 people attended. Saturday, over a thousand chanted in unison while her son led the crowd.
Rally-goers voiced their opposition toward the Trump administration’s immigration policy, which continues to detain migrant families who are in the U.S. illegally. Over 700 hundred rallies were held nationally.
Clinton says even though families are no longer being separated, there still remains much to be done.
"I think with the executive order, we all took a deep breath" Clinton says, "And were thankful that families weren’t being separated, but now it looks like families will be detained. And that’s why we’re here, we’re here to say that immigrants are welcome in our country, they’re welcome in this community, and we will do what we can to stand up for them when they cannot."
President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending the separation of families on June 20. A federal court in California is requiring the government to reunite all separated children age five and older within 30 days.
