Another candidate has filed to run for a seat on the Lane County Board of County Commissioners. South Eugene district voters can expect to see Joel Iboa's name on their ballots in May.

As the son of working class immigrants, Iboa says he understands how difficult life can be for families in the face of national and political despair. That’s why, he says, climate change is one of his top priorities for his campaign.

“Just this last legislative session the state legislature failed to pass a really important measure that would have ensured that Oregonian’s do something about climate change. So I think it’s really up to locally municipalities whether it be the city of Eugene, or the county to push further,” he says.

Iboa is currently the chair of the City of Eugene's Human Rights Commission, and serves on the city Police Commission. He's also a coalition manager for Causa, a Latinx immigrant rights group.

“I’ve spent my life fighting for what’s right and as county commissioner for District 3, I’ll continue to do so. Whether it be making sure people feel safe on the street, or making sure folks have an affordable place to rest their head,” he says.

As of Monday (9/16) , Iboa will face off against Laurie Trieger for District 3, a spot currently held by Pete Sorenson. The deadline for candidates to file for the May 19 Primary Election is March 10.
