The Lane County Board of Commissioners passed a motion on Tuesday banning fireworks in unincorporated areas during fire season.
The ban goes into effect when the Oregon State Forrester declares the start of fire season. The ban includes the manufacturing, sale, and use of fireworks.
Commissioner Heather Buch said she supports the ordinance on the basis of public safety to save lives, property, and the natural environment.
“I feel strongly that this is within the best policy that we as a county can provide on this subject," she said. "There are certainly more discussions to be had as to what starts fires in Lane County, but this is one that has been going on for years and years.”
The ban doesn’t include Eugene or Springfield, but commissioners are hopeful city officials will follow their lead. The motion passed 4-0 with commissioner Jay Bozivich recusing himself.
