As temperatures decline, Egan Warming Center is keeping a watchful eye on the forecast. The Eugene/ Springfield organization is struggling amidst the pandemic to help the unhoused find shelter from the cold.
Egan Warming Center usually operates multiple locations in Eugene and Springfield when temperatures drop below 30 degrees. A coalition of organizations provide space and roughly 300 volunteers keep things running.
This year Coordinator Tim Black has lost many volunteers and the usual shelter sites for adults due to COVID-19 concerns.
“We need spaces. Please, anybody who has commercial space, public space, private space, where we can get some guests and volunteers in there on these really cold nights," said Black. "We promise to disinfect it and clean it and leave it in as good of a condition as we found it. But, we need space. And we need volunteers.”
Egan will be hosting two sites on Friday night - youth at First United Methodist Church and adults at Lane Events Center.
