Oregon drivers now have until May 15 to remove studded tires from their vehicles.
In a normal year, the deadline to remove studded tires in Oregon is the end of March. The Oregon Department of Transportation typically urges drivers to have them taken off even earlier, since the metal studs are blamed for causing millions of dollars of damage to Oregon roadways each winter.
But for the second time this spring, ODOT has extended the removal deadline. The reason is the ongoing public health emergency caused by the coronavirus. Most garages are open and operating, so ODOT is encouraging drivers to get their studded tires removed as soon as possible if it can be done while maintaining social distancing.
The state of Washington has also extended its deadline to remove studded tires until May 15.
