Cascade Brewers Society was founded in Eugene in 1982 and views itself as a small “drinking club with a homebrewing problem.” Since last century, CBS has evolved into a large community of brewers that celebrate the art and science of fermentation.

We’re home to ferments of all types: beer, cider, mead, wine, kombucha, meats, veggies, and hot sauces, to name some. Come join us and share what you’ve got fermenting!

Annual dues are $30 and cover an entire household. Your first meeting is free, and potential members are encouraged to attend a meeting before paying dues to get a feel for our community. We meet every last Monday of the month.

Jewish Melodies in Classical Music will be explored by Chamber Music Amici in “Echoes of Heritage” at 7:30 p.m. Oct 27 at the Wildish Community Theater in Springfield.

This deeply expressive program celebrates the resonance of Jewish melodies across centuries and cultures through seldom heard works by Sergei Prokofiev, Max Brook, Alexander von Zemlinsky and Simon Laxs.

As a writer, you know you have to actually do the writing to make your stories come into being. And it’s legitimately hard to find the time and make the commitment to it.

Accountability works. As does working alongside fellow writers in the sweet quiet of the Wordcrafters studio. No espresso machines screeching, annoying music playing, or folks chatting. Plus, you can get up and go to the bathroom whenever you need to! And you won’t have the distraction of laundry or other procrastination chores.

When you sign up to show up for your writing work, you’re so much more likely to actually do it. These low-key write-ins give you the space, time, and community to make it happen.

Come to the studio and settle in:
-Tuesdays: 9:30-9:45 am
-Sundays: 6:30-6:45 pm
Free parking is available in the parking lot (get a parking pass at the door)
Get your writing done:

Have a chat, connect with other writers, pack up, and head on out!

About your hosts

Jeaux Bartlett (they/them or xe/xem) is a writer and teacher living in Eugene, Oregon. Jeaux has published several books and online courses focused on personal growth and their work has appeared in the Register Guard, Lane Monthly, Rochester insider, Crossroads Chronicle, and Nature’s Wisdom amongst other publications.

Jeaux is a certified Grief Recovery Method specialist, a National Spiritualist Teacher, and a Reiki Master Teacher. Jeaux enjoys writing about overcoming loss and adversity, and learning to trust yourself again.

Jeaux is currently working on Banned in Barbados, an autofiction novel based on their middle school years at an all-girls convent school in Barbados. When they are not writing, Jeaux enjoys playing with natural dyes, knitting, and building a writing camp in the woods.

Sunday evening volunteer host

Heather McBride (she/her) is a content strategist at Adobe but has novelist aspirations. She’s been bookish since birth but got serious about her own writing when teaching composition at U of O.

Heather lives in Eugene with a constantly changing cast of grown children, a bass guitarist husband, and her anxiety ridden lab.

SEASONS: Lan Su Gardens

Lan Su Garden in downtown Portland, Oregon, is one of the most stunning and authentic Chinese scholar gardens in North America. Photographer Carol Isaak found refuge there during the pandemic and fell in love with its archways, plants, bridges, and the way modulated light would puncture its exterior walls. Isaak photographed the garden in all four seasons for this collection in an attempt to express the serenity she felt while in the garden. Chinese scholar gardens are meant to express calm and provoke contemplation. The layers and shadows in Isaak’s work do both these things. The garden is a collaboration between sister cities Portland and Suzhou, China. Lan Su is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2025.

In Carol Isaak’s words: “I call myself an opportunistic photographer—an adventurer at heart. When COVID curtailed travel, the freedom to photograph regularly in Portland’s Lan Su Chinese Garden became a vital outlet, easing my longing to explore. Lan Su reconnected me with my deep love for Chinese culture. Entering the garden beneath the poetic inscription, "The Garden of Awakening Orchids," I was transported—viscerally and visually—to Suzhou, China. Suzhou, Portland’s sister city and the inspiration for Lan Su, is a place I had the privilege of visiting twice. It’s an astonishing city, rich with artistry and tradition.

As I began to explore the Garden’s mysteries, the seasons shifted—and so did my vision. Over three years, I collaborated with the space, allowing my eye to follow its changing light and subtle rhythms. In time, it became my home away from home. Floating between the magical and the material, I photographed without a plan—simply responding to the Garden.”

About Carol Isaak

Carol Isaak’s art education was at The Cooper Union (BA) in NYC where she lived for a significant time. She has been a Portland Art Museum docent/educator for twenty years, specializing in photography, Asian and contemporary art. Her affinity towards Asian subject matter has led to extensive work that has been showcased in five separate Chinese cultural festivals. Her Chinese portfolio has also been exhibited widely in the Pacific Northwest. as well as numerous exhibits in the United States. Her work is exhibited widely and collected by museums, universities and private collectors.

The 32nd annual Día de los Muertos Exhibit, opening features work by 29 artists from three states, five altars or ofrendas honoring the dead along with a community altar, and a Day of the Dead Gift Shop with authentic crafts from Mexico presented by Suzanne Algara of Buganvilla Imports.

The artwork focuses on the Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead holiday, which blends the ancient harvest rituals of the Aztec god of death and the Roman Catholic holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days. Far from a somber holiday, Día de los Muertos is a playful celebration. In the words of Mexican poet Octavio Paz: “The Mexican frequents it [death], jokes about it, sleeps with it, and celebrates it. It is one of his favorite toys and most steadfast love.”

Federal funding cuts have crippled emergency preparedness efforts in Lane County – particularly after the termination of a $19.5 million federal grant in May 2025. Lane County Emergency Manager Tiffany Brown will talk about strategies to ease the pain when she is hosted by the League of Women Voters of Lane County. This is a social club for LGBTQIA folks and allies of all ages; we meet every week but only talk about one book per month. Some activities are chatting about what books we’re reading, discussing trans artists and issues, reading each other LGBTQIA-friendly picture books, and we’ll even chat about shoes.

On the last Tuesday of the month we discuss our monthly discussion book. Our discussion book is a book about/for/by trans and gender diverse people.
