US 101 will likely remain at a single lane of travel for as long as 2 months 12 miles north of Florence. A landslide this weekend damaged the roadway near Heceta Head.
Heavy rains caused a landslide that did extensive damage to the northbound lane of 101. One lane is open to traffic with flaggers and a pilot car. Rick Little with the Oregon Department of Transportation says drivers should expect a 20 minute delay.
He says the road will be restricted until a fix to the landslide can be designed and put in place.
Little: The slide is directly under the north-bound lane and deeper than we anticipated and what we're seeing is water pressure from the drainage activating the slide, pushing material out from deep within that slide action under the roadway."
Little says a 50 foot stretch of the northbound lane has dropped a couple inches. That part of 101 was already slated for a repair project which began in September.
Little says funding and a contractor are in place but engineers need to come up with a plan to deal with this latest landslide.
