Today in Eugene, Oregon’s governor and a coalition of tech companies announced a new apprenticeship program they say will bolster the region’s IT sector. KLCC’s Brian Bull reports.

Governor Kate Brown met with members of the Technology Association of Oregon, Lane Workforce Partnership, and several local tech companies for a roundtable discussion on what’s called Apprenti.  The registered apprenticeship program debuted in Washington last year, and is now available in Eugene and Bend.

Allison Weatherly is with Technology Association of Oregon. She says she’s thrilled to have Apprenti in the state.

“And we’re very excited that Oregon is the second state to have companies join in and take on apprentices here," Weatherly tells KLCC.

"Palo Alto Software, Concentric Sky, and IDX are our first three signed companies taking on apprentices in the next few months.”

Weatherly says money from the Department of Labor is helping fund the effort. At least 45 apprentices are expected to be recruited over a three-year period.
