Across Oregon, college students will have classes online for the first three weeks of the spring term or longer to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Now, students are petitioning for reduced tuition and housing fees for at least a 30 to 60 day period.
Sabinna Pierre is the president of the Associated Students of The University of Oregon. She said the university should be working with students since many have lost sources of income because of public closures.
Said Pierre, “I think as a student, if I’m concerned about, ‘Okay, how am I going to pay my rent? My job is closed on campus. I can’t have a steady source of income. How am I going to pay my rent. How am I going to be able to focus with my online classes--how am I going to be able to put food on the table for me to be able to do well in the classroom?”
As of Tuesday evening, the petition has received over 5,000 signatures.
