On Monday, the University of Oregon announced 282 employee layoffs due to lost revenue from the COVID-19 outbreak. These departments include housing and dining, the EMU, athletics, PE and Rec, and the access shuttle program.
The announcement comes after the UO projected a loss of more than $25 million for the spring term.
All UO vice presidents, deans, and the athletic director have taken a 10% pay reduction for a minimum of six-months. UO President Michael Schill has also taken a 12% pay cut.
All impacted employees will receive a minimum 30-day paid notice. Then, they will be enrolled in the UO Extended Benefits program through August 31.
The university also created the UO Extended Benefits Program which they say will preserve employment relationships and ensure continued access to health insurance. The UO said the goal of the program is to rehire employees when there is more work on campus.
Those in the UO Extended Benefits Program will be able to apply for unemployment insurance benefits while the UO continues to pay its portion of each employee’s health insurance premiums.
