A University of Oregon scholar and administrator has been nominated to serve in President Biden’s administration.
Geraldine Richmond is the UO’s Presidential Chair in Science, and a renowned chemistry professor. If the U.S. Senate confirms her nomination, she will be undersecretary for science in the Department of Energy. The position advises the secretary of energy on technology issues and the management of its national laboratories.
Richmond has been with the university since 1985. She’s designed laser systems, optics equipment, and co-founded the Committee on the Advancement of Women Chemists.
In 2016, President Obama awarded her the National Medal of Science, her second presidential award since receiving one from President Clinton in 1997.
