Algae Bloom At Fern Ridge Lake Prompts Health Advisory

Army Corps of Engineers

The Oregon Health Authority has issued a recreational use advisory for Fern Ridge Lake due to an algae bloom. People are advised to avoid swimming and other high-speed water activities like water skiing and power boating.

Drinking water directly from areas of the lake affected by the bloom are especially dangerous. Activities like fishing, camping, hiking and bird watching are still encouraged at Fern Ridge Lake according to OHA. Boating is safe as long as its not at speeds that could create water spray that might be inhaled. The algae contains cyanotoxins, which can be deadly, especially to children and pets.
