Healthcare workers at McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center in Springfield have launched their second strike in almost as many months, starting today.

This latest strike will last for five days, adding on to the two-day strike SEIU Local 49 held in October. Both sides acknowledge failure to reach a deal, and union advocates say McKenzie-Willamette Medical has continued unfair labor practices.

Rachel Gordon is a certified nursing assistant out on the picket line.

“We have been under negotiations prior to even August with management in hopes that we can settle a fair contract," she told KLCC.

"It’s not an easy choice for us bargaining members to have decided upon this strike, but in order for this contract to be settled, this is a necessary step that we need to take.”

A spokesperson with McKenzie-Willamette says the hospital made multiple proposals, and calls the strike an “unfortunate outcome” given the holiday season and ongoing public health crisis. They add all inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services will be available during the strike.
