Lane Fire Authority Promotes New Levy

Karen Richards

Voters turned down a Lane Fire Authority levy last November. Advocates hope a smaller levy and better messaging will help them pass a property tax increase May 18th.

Lane Fire Authority’s mostly volunteer crews respond to fire and medical emergencies from 16 stations in a large area of western Lane County. Call volume has grown, increasing response time and making it hard to answer more than one call at a time.

Firefighter Chris Staniak joined a recent rally in Veneta. He told KLCC, “It’s been really nice to stand here and hear the honking and people waving. We did not do a great job on first time around of doing rallies like this and getting the word out, and that might have been part of the problem.”

The measure asks the district’s 44,000 voters to increase property taxes by 35 cents per $1,000 assessed value. If it passes, Lane Fire Authority plans to hire three more full-time staff and set aside funds to replace and repair equipment.

More information on the bond is on the Lane Fire Authority website
