Fires continue to burn across Northern California and Oregon, sending smoke and other pollutants skyward. An air quality advisory has been placed on eight southern and central Oregon counties as a result.
Spokesperson for Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality Laura Gleim said young children and people with existing heart and lung issues are the most susceptible to the effects of poor air quality. She said cloth, dust, and surgical masks are insufficient protection against harmful air.
"The best way to protect yourself if you are in a smoky area is to stay indoors," said Gleim. "Keep your windows and doors closed as much as possible. If you do have to go outside, then N95 masks, if worn properly and fit-tested, can provide some protection."
Gleim said air quality and fires can be unpredictable, but the environmental department expects to lift the air quality advisory Saturday morning.
