The University of Oregon and Oregon State University announced Friday they’ll no longer call sports competitions between the two schools “Civil War” games.
The Ducks and Beavers issued a joint statement, saying former athletes and alumni have suggested for years that the name should be dropped. U of O Athletics Director Rob Mullens says the announcement, quote “is not only right but is a long time coming. We must all recognize the power of words and the symbolism associated with the Civil War.”
To those who view the move as merely a gesture, Steve Clark with OSU Relations says, “We think any action that speaks to the values and the diversity and inclusivity of Oregon State is important, and this is not inconsequential.”
Clark says a group of alumni, athletes and community members will decide whether the rivalry needs a new name, and how it should be promoted.
