After the University of Oregon Black Student Task Force made a list of 12 demands in 2015, the university will celebrate the most recent demand completion this Saturday—the creation of a black cultural center on campus.

The University of Oregon will celebrate the grand opening of the Lyllye Reynolds-Parker Black Cultural Center. Dr. Kevin Marbury is the Vice President of Student Life at the University of Oregon. He says the creation of the building is an affirmation to the school’s promotion of inclusivity on campus.

“[The] desire to make sure that every person that comes to campus—particularly black students in this case—feel welcome, feel like this is a place where they can be successful, that they can be part of the community, and can realize the dreams that they had when they decided to come to the University of Oregon,” said Marbury.

The 3,200 square-foot building will be a space for studying, social events, and small classes.

The opening will feature remarks by Marbury and University of Oregon President Michael Schill. The Lyllye Reynolds-Parker Black Cultural Center opening ceremony will be this Saturday, Oct. 12, from 11:30am to 3:00pm.
