Highway 20 Experiences Closures West And East Of Corvallis

Oregon Department of Transportation

Starting Sunday (August 14), driving west to the coast from Corvallis on Highway 20 will be limited.

KLCC’s Kira Hoffelmeyer has more on how to reroute your travels.

The highway will close Sundays through Thursdays from 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. until October. The Oregon Department of Transportation is replacing a portion of the highway’s westbound route built in 1917.

ODOT’s Angela Beers Seydel says the project will replace a 10 mile segment with a shorter, straighter one.

“We’re going to have a 5.5 mile new stretch of roadway that will be smoother, it will have passing lanes, it will have wide shoulders. And it’s a safer, more direct route to the coast," says Beers Seydel.

She says Highways 34 and 18 are good ways to reroute – though travelers should plan for at least an extra hour of driving.

Construction began on this project 10 years ago, with an original completion date of December 2009.

But it’s not just coastal activities that will need extra planning – head east and you’ll hit anot

her closure.

“That is at mile post 56, which is 26 miles east of Sweet Home," says Beers Seydel.

This is so ODOT can repair a bridge built on a major landslide in the 30s.

Seydel also cautions against just letting a GPS generate another route, as it can lead drivers on to roads that aren’t safe for public use.
