Tsunami Prep For The Hospitality Industry

Hotels on the coast have another resource to be prepared for disaster. The Oregon Office of Emergency Management created an online module to educate the hospitality industry on how to stay safe in the event of a tsunami.

While anyone can complete the thirty minute training on oregon-tsunami.org, the current focus is on hotels and Airbnbs.

Geologic Hazards Program Coordinator Althea Rizzo explains why.

“What are you going to do with all those visitors? That’s one of the issues and one of the reasons why we developed this program is we’re basically inviting people to come in to Oregon, to come into our home and enjoy the beauty that we live with every single day, so their safety is our responsibility.”

Some of the topics covered include the types of responses needed based on the proximity of a tsunami to the Oregon Coast.

Rizzo hopes hotels and Airbnbs will use the resources, such as the Tsunami Evacuation Zone Maps to help visitors feel safe while the Coast.
