13th Avenue Bikeway On Its Way To Completion

City of Eugene

Crews are about halfway through a project to improve bicycle safety and access on a stretch of 13th Avenue that connects the University of Oregon with downtown Eugene.

What is now a one-way street for both cars and bikes will be transformed into a two-way protected bike-way, separated from cars by a concrete curb. City of Eugene Project Manager Bryan Root said cyclists and skateboarders have already been going the “wrong” way on 13th.

“You know, rather than trying to force them somewhere else, we really thought, lets give them a safe place to be and encourage multi-modal transportation.” Root said.

Root said the project is in keeping with the city’s Vision Zero plan to eliminate traffic fatalities on its streets. The 13th Avenue Bikeway between Lincoln and Alder streets is expected be complete by the end of summer.
