New Affordable Housing Project in Springfield Gets State Funding

Saint Vincent de Paul

The supply of affordable housing continues to grow in Lane County, but it can’t keep up with demand. A project in Springfield recently received state funding.

St. Vincent de Paul plans to start building The Myrtlewood in downtown Springfield next spring. It’s a 35-unit complex of one-bedroom apartments. St. Vinnie’s Executive Director Terry McDonald says 9 of the units will be set aside for people with developmental disabilities.
“So increasing that population’s access to housing is always very critical.” McDonald says, “The other part of it is we’re trying to get more density of housing especially in downtown cores next to places where there’s good connectivity and of course Main Street has great connectivity.”
McDonald says the state approved $6.5 million dollars in tax credits over 10 years and $400,000 in General Housing funds. The project also has federal funding. The Myrtlewood will be on the site of what’s now an emergency shelter operated by Sheltercare. Its current residents will be relocated.
