Governor Kate Brown is calling on the Oregon Legislature to tackle homelessness among veterans.

Speaking at the Lebanon Veteran’s Home recently, Brown said she supports using money from the general fund for affordable housing and homelessness prevention programs. This includes increasing the number of service officers.

“These service officers work as advocates to ensure that we leverage significant federal benefits…both to the benefit of our veterans, their families, and our communities around the state,” said Brown.

The Governor’s Office says a better than expected revenue forecast shows an additional $200 million in state revenue.  That and new Measure 96 lottery dollars are expected to fund the initiative.

State officials say there are 1500 homeless vets in Oregon.
