Elliott State Forest Sale Attracts One Bid

Oregon Dept. of Forestry

Oregon’s attempt to sell off the Elliott State Forest has drawn only one bid. Wednesday the Oregon Department of State Lands disclosed the offer came from a Southwest Oregon timber company and Indian tribe.

The lone bid came from Lone Rock Timber Management of Roseburg and the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Indians. Lone Rock’s Jake Gibbs says he was surprised theirs was the only offer submitted.

Jake Gibbs: “No, I can say that with a straight face, even though I’m smiling. But no, we did not anticipate being the only proposal with the level of interest around the Elliott.”

The company and the tribe offered $220 million to buy the forest. That’s what the state said the 82-thousand acres of public land is worth. It’s located in the Coast Range near Coos Bay.

Oregon decided to sell after the Elliott stopped producing timber revenue for public schools. The plan has met with criticism from conservation groups, sportsmen and public lands advocates.

The state is reviewing the offer. A decision whether to accept could come by the end of the year.
