On Monday, the Eugene City Council is expected to vote for a legal overnight camping spot for homeless people during the winter.
Mayor Kitty Piercy expects the council to support the ordinance. She says the original idea was for the camp to only be open from dusk to dawn.
Piercy: "I think they may be looking at changing the time in some cases they may have to be in and out when it's dark at both ends. I think they'll be some adjustment to that. And we don't have a specific location. There are some that are being talked about. We're still working out the details."
Piercy says the proposed camps will include sanitation facilities and what she describes as MASH-style tents. Meanwhile, overnight temperatures are expected to drop below freezing this week. The Egan Warming Centers in Eugene and Springfield will activate Tuesday 11/24 and remain on standby through Monday 11/30.
The Egan Warming Center is seeking volunteers. Their next training is December 1st.
