With temperatures forecast to be at or below freezing, the Egan Warming Centers plan to open Tuesday and Wednesday. They'll be on standby through next Monday [Nov. 30].
Shelley Corteville is coordinator of Egan Warming Centers. She says they're in need of trained volunteers, especially Thursday, Thanksgiving night. She says donations are also appreciated, especially socks.
Corteville: "Warm socks are huge for our guests because often they've been in the same socks for quite a while or they've been in wet socks for quite a while."
Corteville says they also need blankets. Egan Warming Centers is named after Tom Egan, a veteran, who was homeless when he froze to death outside on a winter night in Eugene in 2008. In Cottage Grove, a warming center is open tonight and tomorrow night at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.
