At their Tuesday meeting, the Springfield City Council plans to choose an interim mayor to replace Christine Lundberg who stepped down last summer.
The council decided last fall that appointing an interim mayor from their ranks would be best under the city charter. Two councilors have applied for the post: Sean Van Gordon and Leonard Stoehr.
“Once the interim mayor is selected, that would create a vacancy on the council,” said city public information officer Amber Fossen. “So that would then lead us to the next step in the process which would be recruiting for that council vacancy.”
Fossen said the city would look to do that recruitment at the end of January or early February with the goal of selecting the new councilor in March. The interim mayor will serve through 2022.
Christine Lundberg announced she was stepping down from the Springfield Mayor’s seat effective immediately on August 15, 2020. The following Monday Springfield police arrested her son, Benjamin Lundberg, on sex abuse charges.
