A road to a popular hot spring in the Willamette National Forest east of Eugene has been closed since August. There’s still no estimate for when it will re-open.
Forest Service Road 19, also known as Aufderheide drive was closed since a fire burned through the area last summer causing downed trees and landslides. The Forest Service is working to re-open the road but as spokesperson Chiara Cipriano explains, winter storms and heavy rains caused more downed trees.
“And we are still seeing landslides along Forest Service Road 19, Aufderheide Drive. And so, until we can be sure that the integrity of the road is safe, we’re going to keep mitigating the hazards.”
Crews have been improving the trail to the popular Terwilliger Hot Springs, also known as Cougar Hot Springs. The Forest Service urges people to avoid the area until Road 19 is re-opened.
