U Of O Group Expresses Concerns Over Neo-Nazi Activities

A series of national walk-outs are being held tomorrow to protest school violence. As KLCC’s Brian Bull reports, University of Oregon activists are also speaking out against neo-Nazis and white supremacists.

The Columbine School Shooting happened on April 20th, 1999, a date that coincided with Adolf Hitler’s birthday.  It’s those associations that have members of Jews Against White Supremacy (JAWS) – wishing to highlight neo-Nazi activity around the U of O.

Two JAWS members whom we’ll call “TJ” and “Daniel” – asked not to be fully named in this story due to fears of retaliation, harassment, and "doxxing" -- the uncovering and sharing of personal information online. They say they’ve seen posters and graffiti pushing neo-Nazi views.

“White supremacists around town know that that’s a really good place for them to recruit," says TJ.  "That’s one of the reasons why known Nazis in our area, don’t get caught doing illegal activity, because they have students do it for them.”

“And they’re finding the permissive speech policies at many universities is giving them cover to openly recruit students,” adds Daniel.

Both activists say they want administrators to create a campus climate free of discrimination and hate crimes.
