Artist and poet Sam Roxas-Chua Yao has worked alongside archaeologists in Astoria, The Dalles, and John Day to explore Chinese history in Oregon. Come discover how Sam translates artifacts to art through audio field recordings, calligraphy using inks made from collected material, and poetry inspired by site surveys and subject matter experts.

Practice figure drawing with a live model wearing fitted clothing Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m. at the Newport Visual Arts Center, 2nd floor classroom. Easels, paper, and charcoal are provided, or bring your own materials. Friendly, free (donations accepted!) and all skill levels are welcome. Presented by the Coastal Arts Guild.

The Coastal Arts Guild is excited to offer its monthly Talk About Art gathering at the Newport Visual Arts Center Thursday, March 19th at 2 p.m. This month's speaker will be scientist and talented artist Cheryl Horton.
Cheryl's presentation, entitled "Creating Community: My Journey To Art Through Science," will focus on how her study of the natural sciences and the skills of observation it requires led her to a passion for the visual arts, most recently emphasizing printmaking. Motivated by the experience of the pandemic Cheryl now shares these skills with the community through teaching, volunteering and her whole-hearted goal of community building.

The Lane Community College Art Gallery opened two exhibits Monday, January 12th, featuring LCC faculty and artists Carrie O’Coyle and Teresa Meier. A Closing Reception and Artist Talk for both shows will be held at the gallery on Thursday, March 19th from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. There are also two days that the artists will be available in the gallery to have informal talks with the public about their work. Stop by the gallery to talk with the artists on January 22nd, from 12:00 - 2:00 PM or February 26th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

Transformation by Carrie O’Coyle, is a series of paintings inspired by emotional knots of life made of the thread that connect us all. The series emphasizes the delicate balance between being together and feeling apart. Each piece is a dynamic interplay of paint, texture, and emotion–layered, scraped, and reworked–reflecting the artist’s continual search for clarity amidst the chaos. The exhibit is in the Roger Hall Gallery till March 19th.

Collective Inventions by Teresa Meier features autobiographical self-portraits of the artist, where the surreal intertwines with the personal to create a captivating exploration of identity. Through large-format works that invite viewers on a fairytale-like journey, the artist delves into the complex relationship between past and present, revealing how our histories shape our perceptions of self and connection. The exhibit is in the Main Art Gallery till March 19.

The Lane Art Gallery is located in building 11 on main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave., Eugene, and includes two adjacent exhibit spaces, the Main Gallery and the Roger Hall Gallery. Join Michele Guieu for an informal, artist-led walk-through of Seeds of Abundance. Moving through the gallery, she will share stories from the land, the farm, and the making of the exhibition, offering insight into materials, process, and participation. In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease.

Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees.

As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Written with warmth and humor, Radium Girls is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece for 9 to 10 actors, who play more than 30 parts—friends, co-workers, lovers, relatives, attorneys, scientists, consumer advocates, and myriad interested bystanders. Called a “powerful” and “engrossing” drama by critics, Radium Girls offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth, and the commercialization of science.
